Underground Opera Company

Archipelago and the Underground Opera company transformed a 150 year old underground water tank into a rich and dramatic space for performance.

SUBTERRANEAN ARCHITECTURE FOR AN UNDERGROUND OPERA

Underground Opera wanted to stage a concert beneath the surface of the city of Brisbane and approached Archipelago to help make its vision a reality.

The site is the heritage listed Wickham Terrace reservoirs in Spring Hill, Brisbane which sit almost completely underground and provide an environment unique in the city. Archipelago assisted the opera company with project management, design and approvals and the successful first season was staged in 2013.

The significant achievement of the Opera in the Reservoir was recognised with the awarding of a 2015 National Trust Queensland Heritage Award, Interpretation and Promotion, Silver and Australian Event Awards 2015, State winner in Queensland for Best Cultural Arts or Music Event.

The infrastructure installed for the Underground Opera has remained and this until recently forgotten, underutilised space, has become alive again with performances.
