Revitalisation of an iconic Brisbane structure

Set within the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha, the Tropical Dome has been a Brisbane Icon since the mid-seventies.

More than 700,000 locals and tourists enjoy the Botanic Gardens every year, with this number expected to grow to 1.7 million by 2030.

Archipelago and Grimshaw, architects in association, were engaged by the Brisbane City Council to provide design advice for the reimagining of the future Mt Coot-tha Gardens Tropical Dome.

The design team evaluated and proposed a series of potential outcomes to assist Council in the provisioning of a reimagined contemporary facility which remediates current issues that the building presents.

The proposal established foundation for the formulation of a business case centred on providing an ‘experience’ of the tropics with ahigh-quality visitor experience, including enhanced educational and interpretation outcomes set within a thriving living collection.
