“Given the opportunity to build a new city centre from the ground up, why wouldn’t we make it the city of our dreams?”
The Maroochydore Central Precinct is a 53 ha site located in central Maroochydore, which forms the future CBD and capital of the Sunshine Coast region.
Archipelago, with Place Design Group, was engaged to provide urban design and architectural input into the District Strategy Master Plan for the Maroochydore Central Precinct as part of an urban design ‘brains trust’.
Along the way, Archipelago facilitated a unique ‘city-making’ workshop with councillors and other stakeholders. The event was provocative, engaging and highly successful; and proved the key to unlocking a significant shift in thinking about the immensity of the opportunity, resulting in a revitalised urban design strategy for the precinct.
The subsequent revised master plan, authored by Archipelago, dramatically re-proposed the original structure planning and in doing so delivered innovative open space strategies that yielded improved land values, better integration of light rail, innovative built form responses, and a distinctive public realm.
The master plan for the city centre represents a highly successful outcome garnered around a high level of stakeholder advocacy.
