4 apartments, community & support spaces
A home for young people living with a disability who have high and complex care needs
Each resident has their own one-bedroom apartment in which they can live independently, within a supportive environment and vibrant community.
The extension project involved the addition of four new apartments to the existing seven, as well as additional community and support space. The original brief was to simply replicate the existing apartment layouts, but early studies indicated this approach was prohibitive within the project budget; so we worked hard to understand the existing layouts—what worked well and what didn’t from both a liveability and operational point of view, and how technology and operational requirements have changed over the years—and we redesigned the apartments to provide an equitable level of amenity but within a significantly reduced footprint.
Each apartment still achieved cross ventilation and daylight to all rooms, private gardens by way of balcony planters, an open plan kitchen, living and dining area and a dedicated study nook as well as extensive personal storage. The floor space reduction was achieved primarily through better planning of overlapping uses and reduction of otherwise wasteful circulation space.
Materials and finishes were selected to provide a neutral, domestic backdrop to allow residents to make the spaces their own.
